What is Medigap?

Medigap is another name for Medicare supplemental insurance. While Medicare is a federal program that provides elder citizens with coverage when they cannot afford it, Medigap is provided by private insurers. You can get Medigap to help you pay for those items that you cannot pay for and that your Medicare does not cover. Medigap is not too expensive, so you will not have too much trouble paying for it if you are on a fixed budget. If you have trouble paying for your medical bills even after Medicare has taken care of some of them, it might be time to purchase a Medigap program.

Who Takes Medigap

If you have doctors who take Medicare, they will generally take a Medicare supplemental insurance policy. You will still want to speak with your doctor to make sure there are not any issues with getting a Medigap program. This way you will be able to keep the same doctor that you have always had. You will not have to make any significant changes that can make you feel uncomfortable. You know where your doctor is and have built a relationship with him or her up to this point.

If you are trying to find a new doctor, you will need to make some phone calls before you purchase a Medicare supplemental insurance policy. When you have a few doctors narrowed down that you would like to work with, call to make sure they take Medicare. If they do take Medicare, they will usually take your supplemental insurance, as well. Make sure you find a doctor that you will feel comfortable with and will have no issues working closely with. There should be plenty of doctors in your area that accept both Medicare and Medigap.

Making a Budget for Payments

While a Medigap policy will not be terribly expensive, you will still want to make sure you have a budget set up to pay for everything. You need to sit down and look at your monthly finances to be sure you will be able to pay for your Medigap plan and that it will not interfere with anything else that you have to pay for. If you have never created a budget before, you might want to speak with a financial adviser to get an idea of what types of things you need to look for when you are creating your first budget.

When you look at your finances, you need to look at all of those items that you pay for every month that you would consider necessities. These would include items such as your housing bills, electric bills, water, travel, and food costs. These are essentially the items that you will not be able to do much about. Even if you wanted to, you would not be able to limit what you spend on these items since you would have a difficult time living without them. Add up all of these costs to have a base to figure out the remainder of your budget.

You will then need to look at how much you spend on things that are not necessities. If you go out to eat, go to the movies, or other types of entertainment, these are areas that you can limit to have more money to spend on your Medigap plan. See if there are other areas that you can lower your spending. You want to have as much money set aside as possible to pay for your Medigap plan. This way you will be able to get the best plan that is available.
